Materials and Carftsmanship

Plank.ie is about pushing the boundaries of furniture design, putting a new twist on the use of Live Edged Salvaged Irish Hardwoods.

We like to use other elements like glass, stainless steel, stone and modern paint colours to give a contemporary edge to traditional woods.

Plank.ie is owned and operated by Mike Holland from his home in Roscommon. A native of West Cork, he has lived in Roscommon since returning from the U.S.A. in 1999.

His passion for all things wood began in 1995 when he joined a high end wood finishing company in Boston. Most of the work was on historical restorations of Victorian back bay mansions and restoring antiques made by designers such as Gustan Stickley. It also involved working on luxurious new builds in the wealthier suburbs. From this he learned to appreciate quality workmanship and the beauty of good design.

Over the years Mike has been continuously building pieces of furniture in his unique style while working full-time as a Wood Finisher. Plank.ie is the realization of a 20 year dream to share his design ideas.

Bog Oak

Bog Oak is the finest of Irish Hardwoods.

Preserved underground in peat bogs for thousands of years the wood develops its distinctive black colour.

Bog Oak suitable for furniture making is quite rare so supply can be intermittent.

After salvaging, the logs need to be milled into boards and dried for up to two years before they can be used to create some beautiful pieces.
